Reaction Time

This week in Science Room 205 tested reaction times. One partner dropped the ruler and we measured our reaction time by seeing where we caught the ruler. Each student had ten chances to test their reaction time. What did you observe or learn through this experiment Room 205?

Team One:

"Your nervous system helps control your body. Your brain sends messages to
your body parts. Your eyes send a message to your brain. Your first couple of
catches will be slow, but then it gets quicker."

Team Four:

"You need to have your eyes open to catch the ruler. Each person reacts in a
different amount of time. Your brain has to tell your nerves to move your hand.
Our actions were voluntary."

Team 5:

"To catch a ruler is a voluntary response because you are focused. Your brain
sends a message to your hands. The nervous system is very fast because gravity
pulls the ruler to the ground within 1 second, and your body responds to it
within 0.5 seconds. Some people don't respond as quickly as others. "

Team 6:

"Everything happens in a split second. Reaction times are different for
different people. If one part of your body is not working, it keeps the other
parts from doing their job. You need to focus in order to catch the ruler"

1. What body system controls your reaction time?

2. What communication path did your body have to take in order for you to catch the ruler?

3. Describe the difference between a voluntary response and an involuntary response.

4. What factors cause your reaction time to be different each time. In other words, what causes your reaction time to change each time?

Mold Observations from our teams:

Team 2~

- Mold takes a long time to form

-Mold can be any color

-Mold has spores

Team 3~

- The mold looks like powder spread

- It's black and dark green

-We can each mold (mushrooms)

Team 4~

-Mold feeds off of dead plants to get nutrients

-Mold spores need to grow in the dark

Team 5~

-Mold on the bread is hard

-The mold fed off of the bread and water

Team 6~

-Mold grows in the dark unlike flowers

-Mold is a decomposer

-Mold can be different colors

-Spores fly in the air

-Mold eats rotten things

Leaf Characteristics Sort

Leaves! Leaves! Leaves! Last week we did a science experiment with leaves. Do you know why? We wanted to sort them by their characteristics. Characteristics are the texture, color, shape, size, and smell...or anything else you observe. Some leaves smell good, some didn't. Smell is one of the characteristics of leaves. My favorite characteristic was texture because I love how the leaves felt. Some were rough, some were smooth, and some felt sticky.

Number 17 and 11 sorted their leaves by size, color and texture. "One leaf was fuzzy. It felt kind of weird," said #17.


Number 15 and number 25 sorted their leaves by the size, shape and color. "One smelled like pizza," said number 15. "It did," number 25 agreed!

Number 23, 18, and 20 measured their leaves in order to sort them by size.

Number 23 said, "One of the leaves was a mint leaf. It smelled so good. I just wanted to eat it!"

"The texture was really bumpy on the older one, and the new ones were really smooth," said number 18.

" When I saw one of the leaves, it looked like a four-leaf clover. I made a wish, but it wasn't a four-leaf clover," said Number 20.

We're Growing Fungus!

Today, we started learning about the Fungi Kingdom. We learned a lot of fun facts from our fungi video. Some fun facts our table teams learned were:

- Fungi can help plants. It gives the soil nutrients and also kills plants. It decomposes animals, trees, and leafs.

- Mold feeds off of rotting things. Fungus helps the environment by decomposing dead things so it makes the soil rich.

- Fungus can stop a plant from getting water. Fungus can attack your body's cells.

- If you leave something out for a long time it will turn into mold.

- Mushrooms are fungus. Fungus can attack your body, and mold has spores.

-Fungi can destroy bone tissue, lungs, and skin cells.

- Mold / Fungus eats living organisms.

**Anyone that can add fun facts to our list, about mold/fungus/ fungi kingdom will receive extra credit.**

We also started our mold experiment, and hopefully we will start growing mold on our bread!
