Quizzes and Going Green

Throughout the school year our class will be taking Math Quizzes to check our understanding. In an effort to "go green", quiz questions will often be given orally or shown on the overhead projector. Students will write their answers on scrap paper. If you would like to know what was asked, check our blog. I will post the questions as well as the sections they cover. It might also be a good idea to review these questions before the chapter test. Having them on the blog will make access to this review tool simple. Below you will find the questions for our first math quiz of the year. Happy Quizzing!

Math Sections 1.1-1.3

1. Make a 10 dot array with exactly 2 rows.

2. Make all possible arrays for the number 14.

3. Write number models for the following arrays.

A) a six by three array was pictured

B) a three by three array was pictured

4. Make 1 array for each number model.

A) 3 * 5 = 15
B) 2 * 9 = 18

Top 10 Signs It is Going to be an Amazing School Year

Today was the first day of school, and we're off to an outstanding start. It was such a pleasure meeting each and every student today and many parents too. I'm looking forward to getting to know your student and family througout the year. I enjoyed many parts of our day today, but I've compiled a list of ten things (I could list many more) that I think show that we're in for a fabulous year:

1. All 28 students in our class came prepared with a smile.

2. The students brainstormed a thoughtful list of classroom responsibilities. I'm so glad they're ready and willing to do their part!

3. Even though the day started out a bit dreary, everything cleared up in time for an afternoon recess as well as outside first day of school pictures.

4. When I asked the students to turn to Roman Numeral xi, they already noticed the Roman Numeral Poster in our room and used it as a reference. They are resourceful!

5. No one in our room knew what the word LITERATURE meant, but now we do!

6. We're recycling in the lunch room!

7. We successfully made it through our first math lesson, and participation was incredible!

8. Evidence of our class' artistic talent was clear as we designed name tags, job pockets, and folders.

9. We've already earned FOURTEEN marbles, and by doing so, Mrs. Bailey's bucket was filled. (ask your student about buckets)

10. On the way out someone actually wanted more of the assigned homework. I wonder if that will happen all year?...or maybe it was because of the particular assignment:

Take FIVE minutes to share your hopes for fifth grade with someone who cares about you...also share this treat!

Thanks for a great first day Room 205. I'm looking forward to a great year with you!
