Reaction Time

This week in Science Room 205 tested reaction times. One partner dropped the ruler and we measured our reaction time by seeing where we caught the ruler. Each student had ten chances to test their reaction time. What did you observe or learn through this experiment Room 205?

Team One:

"Your nervous system helps control your body. Your brain sends messages to
your body parts. Your eyes send a message to your brain. Your first couple of
catches will be slow, but then it gets quicker."

Team Four:

"You need to have your eyes open to catch the ruler. Each person reacts in a
different amount of time. Your brain has to tell your nerves to move your hand.
Our actions were voluntary."

Team 5:

"To catch a ruler is a voluntary response because you are focused. Your brain
sends a message to your hands. The nervous system is very fast because gravity
pulls the ruler to the ground within 1 second, and your body responds to it
within 0.5 seconds. Some people don't respond as quickly as others. "

Team 6:

"Everything happens in a split second. Reaction times are different for
different people. If one part of your body is not working, it keeps the other
parts from doing their job. You need to focus in order to catch the ruler"

Extra Credit Questions:

1. What body system controls your reaction time?

2. What communication path did your body have to take in order for you to catch the ruler?

3. Describe the difference between a voluntary response and an involuntary response.

I glanced out my window and a polar bear was in my yard...

Blog worthy author #28 wrote a great story about the polar bear in his backyard. It goes like this:

I glanced out my window and a polar bear was in my yard. I called my sisters. I told them not to tell anyone. So every day we would watch it from my window. We fed him cereal out of my window.

One day I decided to go out and see if it was friendly. It seemed like it was at first, but then it came charging at me. I ran inside and slammed the door. It was over; I had to tell my mom, but then I thought how it didn't have a name. So I got my sisters. I told them it needs a name. We decided on the name Frank. Frank was a good name.

Then my sisters and I decided it was time to tell mom. So we told her that we had a polar bear living in our backyard. The animal home came and picked Frank up.

Extra Credit Questions:

1. What would you do if you had a polar bear in your backyard? Would you go see if it was friendly?

2. What would you name your polar bear?

3. What would you feed the polar bear?

Here is another blog worthy post from author #7. The students were supposed to finish the story about a polar bear in their yard. #7's story goes like this:

I was in my room upstairs, and I glanced out my window and saw a polar bear. At first I was scared to go out again, but once I realized it was friendly I wasn't scared anymore. I got to ride on his back and played fun, cool games.

If I started to get cold he would warm me up by giving me a warm hug. I would also take him on walks when he had a lot of energy. When my mom said, "Time to take him to the zoo", I was sad. I told him I would always come and visit him whenever I could.

I am a tree! This is my life:

Blog worthy! Author #18 wrote about his life as a tree.

My life as a tree is good because I can take people with a swing on me. The rope moves on my arm. In the summer, people climb me and it tickles me when people touch my branches. The most horrible part is the thunder, lightening, and rain. It makes me feel like I have fallen down.

In the fall, October and November, my hair comes out. The worst part is in the winter. It starts snowing and sometimes my branches fall down like lightening. My wood parts start to get cold. Spring is my favorite season because the sun rises, there are birds on my branches, and I start growing again. The worst about spring are the april showers because it rains like crazy. So my life as a tree is good.

Mechanical vs. Standard Pencils

Here's another Blog Worthy journal entry from one of our students in Room 205. This time students were asked to pick a side in the debate "Which type of pencil is better? Mechanical or Standard?

Number 6 did a terrific job making her point in this debate:

Mechanical pencils! They are much better for the environment! Why? What are regular pencils made out of? Wood! Mechanical pencils come with extra lead. But why is it important? First, wood comes from trees so you have to cut down trees to make them. Second, mechanical pencils are made from plastic and can be recycled! And if mechanical pencils come with lead, you don't have to hear that annoying pencil sharpener sound. It'll distract people in school! And if you run out of lead in a mechanical pencil, you can just stick some more lead right in! It also doesn't make you waste money on pencil grips and stuff because mechanical pencils can already come in cool designs! So everyone, vote for mechanical pencils!

1. Do you agree now that mechanical pencils are better?

2. Will you stop buying regular pencils and start using mechanical ones?

3. Do you think that if more people used mechanical pencils the environment would be better?

It all started when a shining amulet cristal was found in the earth by a group of hard working builders. They gave it to the scientific scholars, Dr. Lecond and Dr. Shorts. The doctors were mixing the cristals with random, flammable potions, and a beaming light was shining. They rushed outside, and it started to float. It went higher and higher and higher up to the sky.

Dr. Shorts went to go get his camera and took a picture. Two days later, it was on the front cover of the newspaper, and people talked about it for months!

Dr. Shorts and Dr. Lecond decided to make more potions because they wanted to make the nighttime sky even more beautiful. It took them about a year to make the four-billions stars that glow up in the sky, and now you know why there are so many stars in the sky.

Number 18 and the Giant Peach...

After attending South Elgin High School's performance of James and the Giant Peach, students in Room 205 had an opportunity to write their own fantasy! Here's Number 18's take on it!

A young boy named Number 18 was lonely because he had no friends, and people made fun of him. They picked on him because they thought he was a nerd. A kid named Zack made fun of him too.
Number 18 was growing peaches for a peach pie. One grew into a one-hundred pound peach! Number 18 said, "I want some bigger crust to make a pie!"
One day Zack smelled something good so he tried to find the mystery smell. He found Number 18's peach pie, and he said, "Can I have a piece of pie?" Number 18 said, "No!" because of the mean things Zack said.

How big was the peach Number 18 used to make his pie?

Students were recently given the journal prompt "write a story that ends with...from now on I'll keep the door locked". Here's Number 16's frightening rendition...

My basement door was never open, and I always wondered why. My sister told me there's a story that says our basement is cursed. I never believed her until I looked inside.
It was a regular Saturday afternoon. I was playing with my best friend Ashley. I came in earlier than I normally did because I wanted to know what was behind that door.
Ashely was with me when I heard a little noise coming from the basement. It was heavy breathing. At first, I thought that it was my dog. That was when I remembered no one has gone there since we moved in here.
We timidly walked to the door. When we opened it...nothing. So we went deeper.
Then we saw a giant purple monster. Ashley and I screamed and ran up the stairs. It chased us, but luckily I got the lock for the door so the monster could not get upstairs. From now on, I will keep the door locked.

During writing last week we read Water Dance by Thomas Locker.

Locker takes the reader through the water cycle by having water tell its story. The 'I' in the story is water. Here is an example from the text...

After discussing Thomas' work, students wrote their own "I am..." stories.

Classifying by Kingdoms, an Essay by Mrs. Bailey's Class

This week we finished our second whole class essay. We decided to connect our Science curriculum with our writing. What do you notice about the essay format?
What did you find interesting about classifying living things? Do you know any additional information about this topic? We'd love to learn more!

Classifying living things into kingdoms

Do you want to learn about classifying living things into kingdoms? You do not have to be a scientist to classify. You have to observe the different characteristics. After we observe the characteristics, you place them into one of the three following kingdoms: animal kingdom, fungi kingdom, or plant kingdom.
Animal kingdom is one way we can classify living things into a kingdom. One way to to classify animals is if they have a backbone or not. Foe example, a wolf has a backbone, and a slug does not have a backbone. Some animals are warm blooded and some animals are cold blooded. For example a dog is warm blooded, and snakes are cold blooded. Those are examples of ways to classify the animal kingdom.
The next kingdom we can classify using characteristics is the fungi kingdom. Fungus is a decomposer. A decomposer feeds on rotting things. Fungus grows best in the dark. We learned this from growing our own mold in the classroom. We can also eat certain kinds of fungus. For example, we can eat mushrooms, which are fungus. Fungi can travel as spores and can attach to the rotting material.
Our last kingdom to classify is the plant kingdom. We can classify plants by their roots. For example a carrot has a taproot and a flower has a fibrous root. We can also classify plants by their leaves. Leaves can be classified by size, color, shape, and texture.
As you can see there are many ways to classify living things into kingdoms. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to classify them. Classifying living things helps scientists organize the kingdoms!

Extra Credit and Rice!

Room 205 recently read a book entitled Everybody Cooks Rice by Norah Dooley.

In the story, a brother and sister go around from house to house in their neighborhood and sample all kinds of rice. As they go to each house, they realize that Everybody Cooks Rice.

As we made connections to this story, we realized that our classmates also have a number of ways their families cook rice. How does your family cook rice?

If you would like to share your family tradition with our class, please feel free to bring in just enough rice for each student to have one taste. We would love to expand our horizons and learn more about the diverse cultural traditions within our classroom community!

Wear Blue Tomorrow!

Tomorrow Spring Trail will hold our annual Veteran's Day Celebration. Fifth and Sixth Graders have been asked to wear blue to support the Veterans that will be in the building tomorrow.

Mayan Writing

This week in Social Studies, we started learning about Native Americans. The Mayans were an early group of Native Americans in the Western Hemisphere. They developed their own system of writing which involved carving symbols onto stone. What else did we learn about the Maya? A week from this last Saturday, I had the privilege of cheering on another Panthers football player in our room! Go Number 17! You did a fabulous job blocking throughout the whole game!
Since it was Homecoming, Number 17 even had his own sign!

And what a pleasant surprise...Number 7 was cheering for this Panthers team as well! Great job!

I also ran into Number 28. He was so kind to take water out to all of the Panthers on the field! Thanks again for inviting me to cheer you on Number 17! You all were amazing!

Progress Report Time!

Mid-Quarter grades are coming home today! Please sign and return your child's progress report by Friday. Next week I will send home a sign-up for conferences.

You will also be receiving the log in and password for checking your child's grades online. I have already added grades that will raise or lower the grade your child received on the progress report. If your child has late work or work from an absence, I generally do not record it until the end of the week. Check back on Friday for a more accurate grade. Social Studies Extra Credit Opportunities

Opportunity #1: Students may submit up to five items for our class' Regions Scrapbook. Students should bring in a picture (one that we can keep) or draw a picture of a place they have been. The picture should include a caption that describes the region/location and characteristics of that place. They should tell how the land or climate of that region effects life there. We will compile each scrapbook item into a class book to help us learn more about our country's regions.

Opportunity #2: Students may read about two letters in the book D is for Democracy and write a summary of the content. This one must be done at school because I have checked the book out from the library.

Please encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity to raise his or her S/S grade! The last day to turn in this Chapter 2 Extra Credit is this Thursday, October 1st.

Leaf Characteristics Sort

Leaves! Leaves! Leaves! Last week we did a science experiment with leaves. Do you know why? We wanted to sort them by their characteristics. Characteristics are the texture, color, shape, size, and smell...or anything else you observe. Some leaves smell good, some didn't. Smell is one of the characteristics of leaves. My favorite characteristic was texture because I love how the leaves felt. Some were rough, some were smooth, and some felt sticky.

Number 17 and 11 sorted their leaves by size, color and texture. "One leaf was fuzzy. It felt kind of weird," said #17.

Number 15 and number 25 sorted their leaves by the size, shape and color. "One smelled like pizza," said number 15. "It did," number 25 agreed!

Number 23, 18, and 20 measured their leaves in order to sort them by size.

Number 23 said, "One of the leaves was a mint leaf. It smelled so good. I just wanted to eat it!"

"The texture was really bumpy on the older one, and the new ones were really smooth," said number 18.

" When I saw one of the leaves, it looked like a four-leaf clover. I made a wish, but it wasn't a four-leaf clover," said Number 20.

E Pluribus Unum!

Throughout the year, our class will work together to write essays. We will focus on topics across the curriculum. For our first essay, we used what we are learning in Social Studies. Please enjoy our essay entitled E Pluribus Unum!

E pluribus unum! This Latin phrase means "out of many, one". It has been the United States motto for over two-hundred years! Even though we are very diverse, we all come together as one. Not only is E pluribus seen in the U.S., you also see it at work in a classroom, neighborhood/community, sports team, and family.

Our classroom shows an example of e pluribus unum. Even though we are diverse, we work together in groups to finish one project. Each person has a different job, but we all work together to keep our one room organized and clean. We work as one line in the hall, moving quietly. Each person does their individual part so our fifth grade class is seen as a bucket filler.

Neighborhoods and communities are another example of "out of many one". Every person has to work to keep it clean. To keep the neighborhood peaceful, we need many volunteers. We also work together to keep our community "green". Everyone must do their part and recycle so the whole neighborhood is kind to the environment.

E pluribus unum is also shown in sports teams. In football the eleven players on the field have to work together as one to score a touchdown. Even though there are 9 players on a baseball field, each position tries to get outs for the team. To score a goal in soccer, each player must pass the ball to other players. The individual team members do their part to score a goal for the team.

Families are another group that demonstrate e pluribus unum. One example is they set the table for dinner. Someone brings the plates and someone else might bring the forks, but they all set one table. Family members do different chores to keep the house clean. Although each person in the family is a different age, they are all still one family.

Families, classrooms, neighborhoods, and sports teams all show examples of our country's motto "E pluribus unum". It takes all kinds of people to allow these groups to be their best. To be a good member of your family, neighborhood, team, or classroom just remember "E pluribus unum"!

Math Packets

Inside of the Friday/Monday folder, students will be bringing home their Chapter One Math Packets. The Math Packet contains all of the homework for chapter one. Students are assigned one page per night. The following day, we check the work in class. This gives students the opportunity to review concepts and clear up any questions they had while completing the homework.

At the end of each chapter I will be grading the Math Packet. I will not check each and every problem, but I will spot check to ensure students are correcting their papers as needed as well as completing their work. For each page that is not completed and corrected with excellence, the student's grade on the packet will drop one letter grade.

If your student received a C + or below, please discuss with them the importance of correcting their papers in class and completing their homework at home the night before. You might want to check your student's packet to see that they are making the necessary corrections in class if they got below a C+ this time.

We're Growing Fungus!

Today, we started learning about the Fungi Kingdom. We learned a lot of fun facts from our fungi video. Some fun facts our table teams learned were:

- Fungi can help plants. It gives the soil nutrients and also kills plants. It decomposes animals, trees, and leafs.

- Mold feeds off of rotting things. Fungus helps the environment by decomposing dead things so it makes the soil rich.

- Fungus can stop a plant from getting water. Fungus can attack your body's cells.

- If you leave something out for a long time it will turn into mold.

- Mushrooms are fungus. Fungus can attack your body, and mold has spores.

-Fungi can destroy bone tissue, lungs, and skin cells.

- Mold / Fungus eats living organisms.

**Anyone that can add fun facts to our list, about mold/fungus/ fungi kingdom will receive extra credit.**

If you are not in our class and you also know about fungus, please inform us! We want to know it all!

We also started our mold experiment, and hopefully we will start growing mold on our bread!

Array Museum

For Math Chapter One, students were asked to bring in household items that contained an array. In an array, each row contains the same number of objects, and each column has the same number of items. Several students took advantage of this extra credit opportunity. Can you write a number sentence for the following arrays?

Number 21 brought it an egg carton (2 rows, 6 columns), crayons (3 rows, 8 columns), and water bottles (3 rows, 2 columns).

Number 24 brought a paper game (2 rows, 2 columns), Number 28 brought in a plastic peg board (14 rows, 14 columns), and number 7 brought in a Lego array (2 rows, 4 columns).

Number 20 brought in a cupcake array (4 rows, 6 columns), but it didn't last long enough to be a part of our museum! Yum!

Number eight brought in a paint pallate ( 3 rows, 8 columns).

Number 4 brought in an array of letters ( 5 rows, 4 columns).

Write a number sentence for one of the arrays to recieve extra credit. Make sure to say which object you are writing it for.

Back to School Picnic

Last week Spring Trail held its second annual back to school picnic. Look who showed up from Mrs. Bailey's class!

Thanks to all who came. I enjoyed getting to know your family a bit more, and thank you number 24 for educating me on what a Rip Stick is! It was a fun evening!

President Obama Speaks to Us

Today we viewed President Obama's address to us. We couldn't watch it yesterday because we were in gym. President Obama spoke to us about challenges we face in gaining an education. He also discussed the importance of giving our BEST every day and setting educational goals. Our brains were really working overtime when he encouraged us to imagine the possible contributions our generation will make to our nation and world.

Following the speech, we wrote letters to the President regarding these issues. We'll post pieces of the letters when they are complete so check back soon. If you missed the speech or would like to watch it again go here: C-Span

First Math Test Tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will have our 1st math test over unit 1. The test will cover factors, divisibility, squaring and "unsquaring" numbers, exponents, prime factorization, and prime and composite numbers. We have been reviewing for the test for the last two days. We have completed two review pages that the students should be bringing home to study. Mourning the Loss of a Loved One

We are currently reading Taste of Blackberries by Doris Buchanan Smith. In this story a boy deals with the pain of losing his best friend Jamie. Jamie dies while taunting bees in their hive, not knowing that he is deathly allergic to them. Losing a best friend is not easy, and Jamie's best friend mourns the loss of his friend in many ways. Here are some of the ways we found he deals with his grief:

pictures Jamie in a better place
goes to Jamie's funeral
doesn't sleep or eat
denies the reality that Jamie is gone
asks questions about what happened to Jamie

Today in class we realized that losing Jamie was so difficult for his friend because of how close their friendship was while he was still alive. Many of us have lost someone or something special to us too, and we realized that having special people in our lives means that we will at some point deal with loss. Top 10 Signs It is Going to be an Amazing School Year

Today was the first day of school, and we're off to an outstanding start. It was such a pleasure meeting each and every student today and many parents too. I'm looking forward to getting to know your student and family througout the year. I enjoyed many parts of our day today, but I've compiled a list of ten things (I could list many more) that I think show that we're in for a fabulous year:

1. All 28 students in our class came prepared with a smile.

2. The students brainstormed a thoughtful list of classroom responsibilities. I'm so glad they're ready and willing to do their part!

3. Even though the day started out a bit dreary, everything cleared up in time for an afternoon recess as well as outside first day of school pictures.

4. When I asked the students to turn to Roman Numeral xi, they already noticed the Roman Numeral Poster in our room and used it as a reference. They are resourceful!

5. No one in our room knew what the word LITERATURE meant, but now we do!

6. We're recycling in the lunch room!

7. We successfully made it through our first math lesson, and participation was incredible!

8. Evidence of our class' artistic talent was clear as we designed name tags, job pockets, and folders.

9. We've already earned FOURTEEN marbles, and by doing so, Mrs. Bailey's bucket was filled. (ask your student about buckets)

10. On the way out someone actually wanted more of the assigned homework. I wonder if that will happen all year?...or maybe it was because of the particular assignment:
